The Bats are a New Zealand band who formed in 1982 and feature Robert Scott (guitar, vocals), Paul Kean (bass), Malcolm Grant (drums) and Kaye Woodward (guitar, vocals). The Bats are one of the oldest and longest surviving groups associated with the Flying Nun record label and the “Dunedin Sound”, they are well known for their singles “North by North” and “Made Up in Blue”.

Video opens with strobe lit shots of a ventriloquists dummy then tilts down a chain to reveal a spinning chainsaw suspended above Robert Scott as he sings. The band are seen performing the song in the windows of the ANZ Bank Chambers building in Christchurch. Later the ventriloquists dummy drinks while watching another dummy on television.
