“'Out of the Blue and Into the Black' is a playful blue screen performance video which very literally confronts the idea of escaping through or seeking refuge in representation. The artist and main protagonist goes through an endurance test of continuously running into a screen showing the credits from an old 1950's science fiction movie in an attempt to try and transcend the realms of the everyday and become part of the screen's filmic world. This work taps into a sub-culture of fandom in which texts are interpreted and reinterpreted in what seems like a desperate desire to live inside a text or texts and ingest it's philosophies and mythologies.
Gwen Norcliffe is a recent graduate of the Elam School of Fine Arts in Auckland who is currently living and working in New York City. While at the Elam School of Fine Arts she studied in the Intermedia Department - an interdisciplinary department focusing mainly on the time based arts. She is part of an artistic and musical collaboration with Jade Farley known as the Gladeyes that has performed in various art galleries and alternative music venues throughout Auckland. She is a self professed film geek and has been a proud member of the Auckland film society for three years.” Exhibition notes.
