Neil Roberts: Good evening. Well, the big bang happened to broadcasting on Tuesday. And if you set didn’t explode with excitement, you’ll probably be wondering what it all means. You won’t be alone. Because most of the media weren’t quite sure either. And neither was the Government. The announcement was so short of details, that anything might happen, and it very likely will. The NZ Herald’s front page lead: ‘Broadcasters To Face Tougher Competition’. “Radio and television stations - long-protected by the comforts of regulation - now face the daunting prospect of a multitude of competitors chasing the advertising dollar, particularly in the highly lucrative Auckland market.”
