An Auckland man who confronted an armed bugler in the middle of the night has paid for it with his life. He was stabbed to death. This morning a 22 year old man appeared in court charged with murder. There is a warning tonight to parents to watch our for letters from American pedophiles, requesting children as pen pals. Customs have recently intercepted some disturbing material and a dozen obscene letters addressed to children. Health Minister Simon Upton is considering tightening the laws on cosmetic surgery. He is concerned some cosmetic surgery is being carried out by foreign doctors who do not have the appropriate qualifications.

The Auckland Area Health Board revealed today that two of the women recalled after the Cartwright Inquiry have developed invasive cancer and one of them has died. Sandra Coney who sparked the inquiry says it has taken five months to make the matter public and the board has not been open enough about cervical recall patients.

Police are searching for two men who robbed a Lower Hutt bank of a substantial amount of money this afternoon.

Industrial action over the Employment Contracts Bill has hit the country’s prisons. Guards have placed a 48 hour ban on accepting new inmates.

Due to a complaint by the Wairarapa Rugby Union’s Jim Holland, the New Zealand Rugby Union will now hold a full investigation into the Allen Whetton stomping affair.
