LOGAN, G. W., Speaker/Kaikōrero

Talk by Major G.W.Logan of Christchurch, 34th Battalion.

He describes the action of the New Zealanders landing on Mono Island under fire. They were a small force which landed at Sonanotalu, in the north of Mono Island.
they fought day and night for a week, at one point fighting non-stop without sleep for over 84 hours in wet and muddy foxholes.
The fighting was mostly by night which he says was a very nerve-wracking business. The enemy attacked and tried to infiltrate, but were beaten off night after night. Sometimes they were out-numbered three to one.

On one occasion, a stand was made on the beach inside our perimeter by Captain Les Kirk of Auckland and Staff Sergeant O. Hannifin of Christchurch and ten others made a very gallant stand. A large enemy force ordered them out of their positions. The Japanese charged and when the New Zealand machine guns were put out of action they held off the enemy with hand grenades, leaving many dead.
