Lieutenant Liley Stratford talks about the defence of Vevi when overrun by German tanks.
At about 9pm the Gunners took up a position overlooking the village of Vevi. The enemy was seen the following afternoon, line after line of tanks and armoured vehicles, and two days of skirmishing followed. During the afternoon of the third day a heavy mist developed, and it started snowing. The New Zealand guns fired down a narrow ravine that night, inflicting heavy casualties and the ravine was lined with enemy dead.
On the fourth morning the New Zealand line was pushed back. In the afternoon the enemy attacked en masse, with line after line of enemy infantry which the New Zealand guns dealt with. During the next ten minutes the enemy suffered extremely heavy casualties.
