DALRYMPLE, Bill

Bill Dalrymple of Arrowtown describes the advance into Tobruk in Libya.

The New Zealanders had a trying time during the advance and water supply
was a big problem. The German was not the fighter he was cracked up to
be and they didn't like the New Zealand soldiers up against them.

The Germans received a great surprise the first morning the New
Zealanders met them at daylight. Some of the enemy soldiers were in bed
and some were eating breakfast while the rest bolted away.

The RAF did everything to help the ground troops, bombing transports,
convoys, aerodromes, dumps and enemy troop concentrations. The famous
German air force was like the NZ Moa, extinct. Only two enemy aircraft
were seen and they were destroyed.
