Mobile Broadcasting Unit commentator Doug Laurenson introduces two field secretaries of the Y.M.C.A. who are travelling on the troop transport with the 3rd Echelon.

First, Bert Steptoe [Military Service no. 34834] sends greetings too New Zealand and Wellington, to 336 Oriental Parade, YMCA HQ, the YMCA Willis Street, members of the Optimists
Club and all his friends.

The YMCA on this transport have established, through the NZ Patriotic
Fund Board, two libraries with over 1000 in each. The reading of over
3000 books in a fortnight indicates how much this is appreciated.

Two interesting talks about the Yukon have been given by the ship's Bo'sun
and the other by Padre Buck of the Anglican Church.
Games facilities are available and writing occupies much of the soldiers
time. Over 30,000 sheets of writing paper have been used to date.

On Saturday 7 September the first sports day was held. Wrestling and
boxing competitions were held the day the ship crossed the line [Equator].

This item is part of a collection of recordings made by the Mobile Broadcasting Units, which travelled overseas with New Zealand forces between 1940-1945. They recorded New Zealanders' experiences of war and messages to their families and friends, which were sent back home to be played on a weekly radio programme.
