This Insight looks at spying. The computer enhanced sped-up telephone conversations will be carefully monitored by 30 New Zealanders stationed in a remote Marlborough valley called Waihopai. The New Zealanders, employed by the secret government communications security bureau will be charged with spying on the business and politics of our tiny Pacific neighbours.
Officially all Prime Minister David Lange will say is that the Waihopai Satellite Tracking Station will not spy on New Zealand communications. Its opponents and intelligence analysts say its just an old fashioned listening post like a bug on an embassy wall. Insight this week looks at the debate over NZ's latest spy base.
