Sapper J. B. Stuart of Otorohanga continues to describe his experiences in Greece.
Early the next evening they again set out towards the coast and on arrival at a large village caused quite a stir. They were advised by
the villagers that the Germans were only an hour away. The New Zealanders then paid a fisherman to take them to an island six miles off
the coast.
After two days the group decided to go to another island, but couldn't find any boat owner on this island who was prepared to help the party
which, at this stage, had grown to sixty in number.
In desperation, a suitable boat was boarded and makeshift parts made to
get the engine running. The noise of the engine brought the owner and
his engineer along with the original engine parts. They were charged
twenty pounds for the use of the boat.
