Insight '89 documentary on issues of personal electronic privacy and fear of 'Big Brother.'

The programme opens with a read excerpt of George Orwell's "1984" which introduced the concepts of 'Big Brother' and 'thought police'.

Justice Minister Bill Jeffries expresses his concerns about electronic privacy. Otago University law lecturer Selene Mize comments. Television journalist Philip Alpers talks about the amount of private information now easily accessbile to journalists via computer databases.

A theoretical news story scenario presented at a recent conference on journalistic ethics is described, and a recording of the discussion it provoked is heard.

Public figures and their right to privacy is discussed by the previous speakers.
