The Moriori ... defeated, enslaved and then their existence denied. Back in 1835 a Māori tribe descended on the beaches of the Chatham Islands with a view to conquer and rule ... and they did.
Insight looks at the rediscovery of the Moriori and what it
means in the current minefield of Treaty of Waitangi claims. How do you
deal with a people who were on the Chathams before the Māori, and who
are the Tangata Whenua?
Report by Debra Johanson.
Speakers - Michael King, author of "Moriori"; Karl Stead, writer; Maui Solomon, Moriori descendant; Sir Paul Reeves, Governor General; Tommy Solomon III, Moriori descendant; Pat Preece, Chatham Islander; Bunty Preece, Chatham Islands County Council Chairman.
