John Proudfoot, commentator with the war time New Zealand Broadcasting Mobile Unit, sends a despatch from the 8th Army Front on the New Zealanders advance over the Idice River, Italy.

The Germans in full retreat were trying to keep an escape route open. Over the previous 48 hours the New Zealanders were in action day and night against the 4th German Paratroop Division, the best fighting force remaining in the whole German army. With the Idice front broken the paratroops withdrew and took up defence positions in the brick and stone houses. The German Paratroopers were withdrawn from Balogna and ran for a defence line along the banks of the Po River.
