During a weekend in April 1981, the Ohinemuri River raged through the Karangahake Gorge, sweeping away the Post Office, homes and shops in the historic goldmining settlement of Waikino, near Waihi. Waikino's residents recall the worst flood in living memory, and its aftermath.
