Jim Sullivan interviews Dr John Macnab of Cheviot Rd, Lowry Bay, Eastbourne, Wellington for "Sounds Historical" on the 50th anniversary of V.J. Day.

He was one of the New Zealand 'J Force' soldiers recorded on a 1946 Broadcasting Mobile Unit disc, talking about their visit to Hiroshima, just after the atomic bomb had been dropped.

Dr Macnab heard the interview on air, and got in touch with Jim Sullivan. He talks about his experiences in Hiroshima and Japan after the bomb and on subsequent visits he has made to Japan.

He observes that the morality of dropping an atomic bomb on civilians was not a consideration at the time and gives his opinion on whether the bombing shortened the war
