To celebrate 1000 Spectrum programmes, Jack Perkins, who started the series 27 years ago along with Alwyn Owen, visits Te Mata Estate, the Hawkes Bay winery of John Buck.
John was Spectrum's front-man in the programme's infancy in 1972. John Buck and Jack Perkins reminisce about those early days, and drink a toast to one of the longest-running programmes on radio.
Jack talks to viticulturist Larry Morgan about the sauvignon blanc grape harvest at Te Mata. Two female grape-pickers discuss their work. A man adds that he picks for the social aspect of the job.
Back at the winery, Jack Perkins and John Buck discuss some of the early Spectrum programmes he made, and look a photographs taken at the time. An excerpt from Spectrum 9 [ID313301] about the Victoria University Motorcycling Club is played.
Jack and John reminisce about being at Wellington College together. John was a boarder and recalls how they tried fermenting fruit to make alcohol in secret - none of which was ever drinkable. They also drank beer and smoked in secret.
John Buck talks further about the harvest at Te Mata, and they toast Spectrum's first 1000 episodes.
