Westra, Ans, 1936-
Diamond, Paul
King, Michael, 1945-2004

Paul Diamond talks to Ans Westra about her experiences as a photographer in the Māori world. She arrived in New Zealand in 1957 from the Netherlands.
Her booklet "Washday at the Pā" depicted a Māori family at Ruatoria in the 1960s but was withdrawn from schools after some Māori and others criticised its depiction of Māori life.
They talk about her techniques and her reasons for wanting to photograph Māori people. They discuss her access to the Ringatu and Ratana churches in the 1960s, most unusual for the time.
She comments about the controversy her photographs have caused and the changes she has noticed in Māori society since the 1960s.
