Field Theory, Broadcaster

A live 72-hour internet stream and radio broadcast by Field Theory from Lancaster Park in Christchurch.

The broadcast began at 10am on Friday 14 November (Canterbury Anniversary Day) and ended at 10am on Monday 17 November 2014. The broadcast was via internet stream at http://thestadiumbroadcast.com and on 107FM in Christchurch.

After the event the producers uploaded most of the broadcast (67.5hrs of the 72hrs) to the internet as mp3 files. These files were then downloaded for this accession.

The following information was sourced from the producers [http://fieldtheory.com.au/current-projects/christchurch-stadium-project/]

AMI Stadium – Christchurch, New Zealand

For The Stadium Broadcast Jason, Martyn, Lara, Jackson and Sarah committed themselves to becoming live channels for the people of Christchurch New Zealand.

Lancaster Park (AMI/Jade Stadium) had been a space for gathering competition and celebration since 1881 when the Lancaster family gave over part of their farming land for a sports ground to be created. Christchurch’s identity has been formed through the crucible of soaring highs and crushing defeats that have taken place on that field. But now it’s in limbo, you can only stare through the gaps in the fence and wonder about all that once happened there.

Over 18 months we negotiated access to the ground (which had not been open to the public since the February 2010 earthquake) and offered Cantabrian’s a chance to once again walk on hallowed turf and deliver whatever they needed to, perhaps a eulogy, a haka, a denunciation or even a sultry version of Tina Turner’s Private Dancer. These small gestures were broadcast to the world for 72 hours nonstop as a tribute to everything that has happened.

This project invited Christchurch to pay homage to the ground as it sits in a state of uncertainty between abandonment and demolition. We were interested in finding the narratives that continue to bind people to the place and provide a platform that asked what those stories mean now and how they are going to shape what comes next.

Field Theory became interested in the narratives that bind people to the Stadium and shape the enigma of place, memory and history. We wanted to offer a playful platform that asks what those stories mean now.

The Presenters:

For the past three years - S-Rod [Sarah Rodigari], part time rapper, full time jaw dropper has become a cult phenomenon. She can be both ingenious and minstrel in the same sentence. She is a caricature of a caricature, a buffoon blown up to animated extremes that she is wholly unique — an eccentric.

While his favourite thing to do in Christchurch is to eat sliders and drink decaf cappuccinos, Couttie Pie [Martyn Coutts] is no softie. He can often be seen with a clipboard demanding other presenters perform better. Known for his ‘drive’ style looks and multiple zipper jackets, Couttie – Pie is ready to take you all the way home.

Jacko’ [Jackson Castiglione] is a highly competitive Australian artist and takes results - of all kinds - very seriously. He shares a fanatical love of cricket and was slightly disappointed when he realised performing was his calling and not being an all rounder for the Australian 11, cricket team.

ThomThom's [Lara Thoms] style has been described as rave-casual and she enjoys organic coyo and avoiding fitness related activities, particularly any form of competitive sport. Thom Thom has been known to peer- pressure people into going to parties and is looking forward to recreating the late 90's Lancaster Park 'mini cookie-time cookie mexican wave' fiasco.

J-Dawg [Jason Maling] wants to get out of the Dawg house and into your heart. The only presenter with any real authenticity, J-Dawg was born in Christchurch and went to artschool here but chose performance art over ever visiting Lancaster Park.

About Field Theory:
[source: http://fieldtheory.com.au/about]

Field Theory is: Jason Maling, Martyn Coutts, Sarah Rodigari, Willoh S. Weiland, Jess Olivieri, Lara Thoms, Jackson Castiglione and Rebecca Burdon. We are a collective of artists committed to making and supporting art projects that cross disciplines, shift contexts and seek new strategies for intervening in the public sphere. We blend arts curating with arts practice, our own and others.

Since 2010 we have supported Colour Auditing of a shopping centre, a walk from Melbourne to Sydney, a soap opera about space, and a new collection of Holy Families. We have helped realise the international collection of lost gloves, a fruitarian lifestyle adventure and a Christmas Island snorkelling tour.

In our capacity as art advocates we have spread the good word at art institutions, museums, festivals, boardrooms and bedrooms. We have hosted forums, raised funds, lead tours, written articles, produced websites and generally represented as many things and ways that we can find.
