Jack Perkins joins a group of city teenagers from Naenae College to experience outdoor life at Graham Dingle's Outdoor Pursuits Centre near Ruapehu.

They join guides John Davidson and Grant Lupton for a week of tramping, kayaking, rock climbing, and survival training. Jack falls in the river and drowns his tape recorder.
