NIAS, Joseph

Carol Nias, the daughter of Admiral Sir Joseph Nias, speaks about her father who was one of the British officials who signed the Treaty of Waitangi in 1840. He father was born in 1793 and married in 1855 at the age of 61. She relates some British history; tells how her father kept guard on Napoleon after the Battle of Waterloo; fought in the Battle of Navarino that freed Greece from the Turks; travelled with Captain Hobson from Sydney; signed the Treaty of Waitangi as a witness and fighting in China. Miss Nias was in her seventies when she made this recording during a visit to New Zealand on February 22, 1937. NB: the original recordings of this are on D938/1 & D938/2. The quality of this recording which was put onto ORT at some unknown time is very scratchy and quite poor but still audible.
