BREAST CANCER DRUG - NZ becomes first country to approve use of Herceptin to treat aggressive early stage breast cancer. Medsafe has given provisional approval and it's now up to Pharmac and District Health Boards to decide whether to fund it. That would cost at least $30 million a year for estimated 400 women who want it. COMMONWEALTH GAMES - ASSAULT ALLEGATIONS - NZ woman cyclist at centre of allegations say incident is a non-event and has been blown out of proportion. Melbourne newspaper reported the woman had complained 2 fellow team members tried to strip off her clothes and urinate on her at the Games Village. Chef de Mission Dave Currie confirmed incident had occurred but wouldn't give details or name athletes involved but did say
it was not Hayden Roulston who faced assault charges last year. Team psychologist Gary Hermansson read statement on woman's behalf; matter referred to cycling's ruling body Bike NZ; live i/v with Dave Currie.
WAIKATO TRANSMISSION LINES - dispute between Electricity Commission and Transpower over plans to upgrade transmission lines across Waikato into Auckland. Commission accuses Transpower of failing to look at alternatives but Transpower insists it has considered options and even shown them to the Commission. BERGHOUT INQUEST - police suggest at inquest for Alzheimers sufferer Dirk Berghout that murder charge hanging over heads of his wife and daughter may have prompted them to suicide. Mr Berghout died in Levin in February last year and his wife and daughter were later charged with his killing. Their bodies were later found floating off the Wellington coast.
