This episode features narration and dramatisations of incidents illustrating the life of educationalist and seismologist George Hogben [1853-1920, former rector of Timaru Boys' High School.]

It includes a classroom scene with children learning by rote and fear of corporal punishment, Hogben's belief in moral persuasion and a curriculum related to the employment needs of his students, Timaru Boys High School, "the natural method of teaching", free education, his knowledge of earthquakes, appointment as Inspector General of schools, and his educational philosophy.
