Dawson, Frederick Walter Whitney, 1876-1977, Interviewee

Dr. Frederick Dawson, 100 years of age, recalls his experiences in the Anglo-Boer or South African War

He starts by explaining the origins of the Boers, as Dutch and Huguenot settlers.

He recalls the use of bullock teams in the war to pull guns and the battle of Spion Kop. The wounded were given a first aid dressing but then left for a fortnight. However, when the doctors were able to treat them, most had healed already, as they were only small bore bullets.

He says the Boer hunted the British forces, in typical guerilla warfare. He says there were few real attacks or hand-to-hand fighting.
