Lewis, Sam, 1878-1976, Speaker/Kaikōrero

Sam Lewis talks about his experiences during the Anglo-Boer War, 1899-1902.

His first posting was with the Colonial Light Horse Regiment but he ended the war in the Bushmanland Borderers guerilla unit. He thinks he was the only New Zealander in this unit of irregulars.

They carried their own rations and their horses' feed and used small 'pom-pom' guns. They saw a bit of action, hunting Boers. He says the war was one-sided and there was little danger.

He says he now regrets being involved in the war, isn't proud of being involved in it and he doesn't blame the Boers for hating them. The New Zealanders were paid 'five bob a day', which was more than the English soldiers and were resented by them also.
