DROP IN Billy Crystal a few moments ago at the Oscar ceremony acknowledging the clean sweep so far for The Lord of the Rings The Return of the King. The film is living up to expectations and so far has won 5 oscars picking up every award at this stage that it's been nominated for.
Earlier this afternoon as the stars sashayed down the red carpet, Keisha Castle-Hughes confessed to be feeling jittery while Peter Jackson was worried about being the favourite for best director and best film. DROP IN Fans reserved some of their biggest cheers for Keisha who is wearing a pink chiffon gown designed by New Zealander Liz Mitchell - we'll speak to her later in the programme.
But now to the award ceremony which is well underway at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood with the major awards of Best Actor and Actress, Best Director and Best Film are still to come. Our reporter John MacDonald is in Los Angeles at [illegible].net party. - a gathering of JRR Tolkein fans. LIVER
Hundreds of people have also gathered at a number of special Oscars events around Wellington, Peter Jackson's home-base, where much of the behind the scenes work on the Lord of the Rings films was done. Hundreds of staff from the production companies involved in the trilogy are celebrating at a downtown venue in the capital to toast their Academy Awards successes. Over five hundred people are doing likewise at the Embassy Theatre in Wellington's Courtenay Place, which has been screening a live broadcast of the Oscars ceremony. When the Return of the King took out the first of the eleven catergories it has been nominated for, the announcement was met with rapturous applause. Just a short time ago, New Zealander, Jamie Selkirk won the Film Editing Oscar for Lord of the Rings - The Return of the King. It is the first time he has been nominated for an award and back in Wellington his fellow production staff are busy celebrating at parties dotted around the capital. Editing operator, Annie Collins, worked with Jamie Selkirk to edit the last film of the Lord of the Rings trilogy and she joins us now: LIVER

Waikato farmland is expected to bear the brunt of floodwaters on the Waikato and Waipa Rivers over the next 48 hours. Environment Waikato says heavy rain in the Waipa catchment, and high water levels in Lake Taupo mean the rivers will be carrying a lot of water with heavy flows tomorrow and Wednesday. The Waipa and Waikato River merge at Ngaruawhaia and farmers are being asked to move stock from low lying areas in the northern Waikato. PKG

The Prime Minister has signalled that a mediator will become involved in the dispute over a proposal to close half of the schools in Invercargill. The Education Minister, Trevor Mallard is to attend a meeting in the city this evening chaired by the mayor Tim Shadbolt. There have been calls for the government to stop the closure of up to seventy schools nationwide including in Southland after Mr Mallard announced a five year moratorium on further closures last week. Our education correspondent, Gael Woods, is with us to discuss this latest development. Q and A

Auckland fashion designer Liz Mitchell has created the ice pink silk chiffon gown worn by the New Zealand best actress nominee, Keisha Castle-Hughes. It's a distinctly New Zealand flavour - with crystal silver fern detailing and a matching cape embossed with a crystal koru motif. Liz Mitchell joins us now. LIVE
Another vwinner for the Lord of the Ring Resturn of the King was the Canadian born composer Howard Shore. After scoring dozens of films since the late 70s, Howard Shore composed for all three Rings movies but picked up the prize for best original score the last one. DROP IN
Torrential rain throughout the country last month has broken 30 monthly [illegible] records, caused devastating floods, and produced the windiest February on record. The National Institute of Weather and Atmospheric Research, says seven heavy rainstorms produced between four and six times more rain than average, in the North Island from Waikato to Wellington. Frequent depressions tracking south of the country and a lack of anti cyclones resulted in the strongest westerlies recorded since wind records began in 1941. Australia has ordered an independent inquiry into the intelligence gathered in the lead-up to the Iraq war, after a parliamentary report found the threat of weapons of mass destruction may have been overstated. Prime Minister John Howard, who sent 2,000 soldiers to join the U.S.-led invasion, bowed to growing pressure to follow the United States and Britain and their inquiries into whether the Iraqi threat was exaggerated to justify the war. The parliamentary committee that oversees Australian intelligence services cleared the government of "sexing up" pre-war intelligence, but said it's possible spy agencies did overstate the case for Iraq still having illegal weapons.
