Hospitals around the country survived the 24 hour strike by health workers without any serious mishaps, although many were stretched to the limit with only a few senior staff and volunteers to keep the hospitals running. Ann Howarth reports that there is still no settlement of the dispute in sight and there is a threat of further strike action.
National Director of the Institute of Health Management, Michael Cash says that things have to be done immediately to prevent the threaten 48 hour strike. Judith Scott, Corporate Manager of Human Resources for Auckland Area Hospital Board, talks about how some of the hospitals in her area coped with the volunteers doing the hospital duties. John Yuill comments on how the Wellington hospitals coped, and he talks about the patients attitude to the strike. Medical Association chairman Tony Baird speaks about the situation from a doctor's point of view and he expresses concern at the threat of a 48 hour strike.
