Story of the Tainui Canoe. Lecture given by Dr. Pei Te Hurinui Jones at Hamilton Teachers Training College [probably as part of the Festival of Māori Arts held in Hamilton in 1966.]

An introduction to Dr. Jones on his personal background is given by a Mr Jenkins, before Dr. Jones gives his talk on this history of the Tainui people.

The Tainui area stretches from North of Auckland city to far south of the Taumarunui district, then from Rangitikei down to Porirua, and continues to explain further tribal boundaries and names to his audience.

Dr. Jones goes into great detail about several colonies of Tainui people in the North.

Elaborating on the origin of the Māori, he speaks of the similarity of blood groups between Māori and American Indian. Talks of land confiscation, and says that the Land Court keeps good information on Tainui affairs and other tribal affairs.

It is also said that the Tainui brought birds for special rituals thus allowing the birds to flourish in the forests where they were released.

Dr. Jones was thanked by Maurice Raureti and Professor James Ritchie.
