Te Kapunga James Cook High School (Cultural group), Performer

This programme features kapa haka performance by James Cook High School from Manurewa. The school was named after Captain James Cook, commemorating his first journey to New Zealand in 1768.

The school was opened 200 years later in 1968 and according to the present Principal Mr Ken Trembath, the ship 'Endeavour' is the school's emblem along with the constellation of stars - the Southern Cross.

In the school foyer stands a stained glass display depicting the many cultures portraying the school's multi-cultural nature. With the display comes the motto, "We will go forward and learn, keeping our identity, our pride of race."

At the Auckland Secondary School's Māori and Pacific Island Festival held earlier in the year, the school was represented by the school's kapa haka group is called Te Kapunga, symbolising "The cupping of hands". The meaning is that when you learn things Māori it is up to the individual to pass on that knowledge to future generations. Hori Pomona, Heather Matthews, Elizabeth and David Tamanui, Sandra Waitai, Chris Henare are all involved with Te Kapunga.

1.17.28 - 1.21.05 The whakaeke or entry is called " I te timatanga o te ao" - The beginning of the world, composed by Hori Pomana (Ngāti Kahungunu, Ngai Te Rangi) This entrance mentions the three baskets, knowledge, spirituality and prestige - all qualities one should strive for throughout a lifetime.

1.21.08 - 1.24.38 Pātere - Ancient chant, composed again by Hori Pomana entitled "Tamaki makau rau" the Māori name for the Auckland region. The pātere was composed to enable people to identify different landmarks within the area., for instance Waitemata is the harbour along the Auckland waterfront, Takaparawha - Bastion Point at Orakei and the Manukau Harbour situated on the west coast of Auckland.

Following this is their action song,'Karangatia ra', composed by the late Sir Apirana Turupa Ngata a well known orator through out Maoridom.

1.24.47 - 1.27.54. Poi - "Anei ra taku poi - Here is my poi", composed by Elizabeth Tamanui, Isobel Cassidy and Jack Allan, along with Elizabeth's mother and father, the late Archie Heretaunga Riki Tamanui and Maidy Hokimate Tamanui.
1.27.59. - 1.30.44. Haka - "Te haerenga mai a Kupe - The journey of Kupe." This haka comes from the Aotea/Taranaki area. It was given to a haka group from Papakura/Rangimarie who in turn passed it on to Te Kapunga by a Kaumatua.
The whakawatea or exit is called "Whetu kikorangi". The tune to this is from the song "Blue Star."
