Leo Fowler, Interviewer
Sinclair, Doug, 1919-1985, Interviewee

Dr Doug Sinclair talks with interviewer Leo Fowler about his collection of contemporary Māori waiata yet to be published.

He locates the genesis of the modern Māori action song in the years 1907-1914 and cites Sir Apirana Ngata as an important early influence.

Doug Sinclair, originally from the South Island, had joined the Ngāti Poneke Club in 1936 at the time of the Tahiwis.

He talks about trends in the modern Māori action song and its role in Māori communities, and also the role of 'part songs' poi and haka.
