As the shadow of evening falls, my thoughts go searching, turning this way and that way, but to avail, in my sleep I see you but when I wake its only a dream, I search the clouds but they bring sad tidings, all is ended.

- Haere ra, haere ra, e taku reta: a love song

- Tangi tīkapa: a song of sorrow, composed by Ruby Marie King of Auckland (Mari Hamutana)

- Taku whakatakariri e: composed by Rangiuia a chief of Ngāti Porou expressing his disappointment at not being allowed to sing overseas by his elders.
