A commemoration ceremony was held at the Waitoitoi Hall in Taranaki, to celebrate Rev John Whitelys memory. He was a methodist minister who was murdered by a band of renegade Māori, thus ending thirty six years of devoted service in the mission field in New Zealand.
Speakers at this memorable occasion were Potete White a leading elder of the local tribes, and his interpreter is the Rev Tiki Raumati, the Honourable David Thomson, Minister of Defence and Tourism, and MP for the district.
The formal part of the ceremony was held at the historic site of Puke-a-Ruhe and was followed by a hangi meal to celebrate and mark one hundred years of piece and fellowship at the Urenui Marae. Other speakers there were Hori Koia and Rev WH. Greenslade.
