Waihīrere (Cultural group)

Selwyn Muru speaks with Rev. Kingi Ihaka, Merimeri Penfold, Doctor
Pat Hohepa, and Linda Mead to share thoughts on the modern Māori action
song in todays cultural climate.

Rev. Ihaka says that the Modern Māori action song has a very significant
place in Māori society, that it has been accepted as part and parcel of Māori
tradition.

Dr. Hohepa says that it is the link between was is old and what is new, that it
contains themes about the place of modern day youth and modern day within
the city, yet somehow still manages to keep that depth of pholosophy.

According to Merimeri Penfold it plays a superficial role in Maoridom.

Linda Mead says that the modern Māori action song is one of the few items
that can be transported into the pakeha world and enjoyed as they can
almost be part of that type of singing.
