Broadcaster Alf Sanft present a programme assembled from field recordings made by the New Zealand Broadcasting Service for the Māori Purposes Trust Board, at the opening of the wharenui Tapeka at Waihi Marae on Lake Taupō.

Many tribes from through out New Zealand gathered on the shores of Lake Taupō home of the Ngāti Tūwharetoa people for the official opening by the Prime Minister Sir Walter Nash, of the wharenui Tapeka, spiritual home of the host tribe of which Hepi Te Heuheu is paramount chief.
Hepi Te Heuheu welcomes the Prime Minister and his party which includes Mr. Hori secretary of the Japanese legation and the Chinese Consul Dr. Lu has spoken for his people in both Māori and English.
