The wharenui will be the largest in New Zealand when completed.
Mr Love describes the tōtara carvings for the whare which are being done locally, based on traditional pre-European carvings by local iwi. Trainees at Petone Technical Institute are doing the carving under the direction of Jock McEwen, Stan Hunt and John Ripia.

Mr Love describes the extensive groundwork being undertaken to landscape the site and include modern facilities such as an underground car park. He says the project is costing around $600,000, with a lot of the money being found through fund-raising.

[Date of the recording unknown but appears to be several months before the marae was opened on 31 May 1980.]
