Durie, E. T. J. (Edward Taihakurei Junior), 1940-, Interviewee
Walker, Piripi, Interviewer

Eddie Durie (Ngāti Raukawa) Chief Judge of the Māori Land Court, speaks with Piripi Walker about the use of Māori language in the Māori Land Court. He says it is often easier to reach agreement in Māori, whereas English is better at precisely defining differences between parties. Māori is better at encouraging people to see what they have in common. Judge Durie talks about Māori values being increasingly adopted by all New Zealanders and encourages young Māori to consider law as a career.

Henderson High School hosted the 7th Auckland Māori and Pacific Islands Schools Cultural Festival. We hear part of the pōwhiri to participating schools and VIPS.

This is followed by an action song by Glenfield College : Ahu Mahi, composed by the late Kohine Ponika.

Rutherford High School : Action song/Nga Waka, Nga Hapu (Winners).

First broadcast during RNZ’s Pacific Week.
