Christmas 1974 - Matauri Bay.

Waiata: "There is a happy school not far away" sung by pupils of Matauri Bay Primary School.

Matauri Bay is situated on the East Coast of Northland between Kāeo and Kerikeri. Synonymous with Matauri Bay and the sea is the name of Broughton Pere, Paratene Pere Paratene.

Haare Williams talks with Martha and Broughton Paratene, elders, about life in Matauri Bay. Broughton speaks about fishing and Martha talks about crayfishing and the care that goes with catching crayfish.

Broughton talks about being brought up on the Cavalli Islands.

Poem: "The Deserted Island" by Raina Pawa of Matauri Bay, read by Haare Williams.

"The Skybird Song" sung by Neil Diamond.

Whakatauaki: "Ehara tatau e patu to taua ringa e kitea i te kanohi, engari ano te mea kei te haere mai ko te paua ano taua e kitea ai, kua mate te tangata."

Explanataion: Te Mapuna is a reef lying some 20 feet and situated between Matauri Bay and the Cavalli Islands. It often breaks the surface and it was prophesied that in time, a taiaha would appear in this land, owned by a fair skin race of people, where its flash meant death.

Martha sums up her feelings.

Waiata : "Te Iwi" Matauri Bay pupils.
