- Eels of Lake Ellesmere -

Riki Ellison (Ngai Tahu) talks to Haare Williams about conservation and the eels of Lake Ellesmere.

Riki says the only measure towards conservation has been that the Minister has reduced the commercial outputs by setting quotas for them. He also says that there are no Māori commercial fishers. He also expresses his concern that the eels are being commercialised by the powers that be at too early an age.

He talks about the life cycle of the eels from the time they roll into Lake Ellesmere to the time they migrate away.

Riki also reminiscences about the old days when as a youngster he and others went out eeling and describes how they would clean, store and cook them.
