- Turakina Māori Girls College -

In 1905 the Presbyterian Church of New Zealand decided to by the school
established in Turakina by The Rev.John Ross and use it for the training and
education of Māori girls.

The first Turakina College, the old Manse building in Turakina was opened by
Richard John Seddon in April of 1905, the total roll 30 pupils.The first principal
was Mr.AG Hamilton was assisted by his wife and three daughters.

1920 was the era known as the Kinross/Truman era, a thirty year period during
which Miss Kinross as Principal and Miss Truman as Matron set the standards for
staff and management.
In 1928 the College moved to Marton, and it cost $17,000.00 to re-establish.In
1981 Turakina College was intergrated into the "State education system".
