A huge gathering of Māori and European converge upon Hairini Mare for the offical opening of the New Meeting House "Ranginui", It is to be opened by His Excellency the Governor General, Sir Bernard Fergusson, and the dedication service by the Māori Bishop of Aotearoa, Right Rev Wiremu Panapa.
His Excellency and his party will be accorded a full Māori welcome, as it is
the first time that a Governor General has been to a Māori Marae in Tauranga.

Speakers at the opening of the Ranginui Meeting House include Mr. Haare
Piahana of Tauranga, His Worship the Mayor of Tauranga, Mr DS Mitchell
and MP for Tauranga Mr. GA Walsh.
- Haka pohiri by Ngāti Ranginui and Tauranga Moana. The wero is performed
by Rev. Napi Waaka.
- Dedication service.
After Mr Piahana kōrero a waiata tawhito was sung :-
Kapakapa ana te whetu ? This waiata was sung at the "Tauranga Battle".
