Māori and Pacific Islands Cultural Festival:
The Aotearoa Māori Festival of Arts (formerly the New Zealand Polynesian Festival) is just three months away. Regions across the country have already chosen their participating teams, and at this time it appears that 25 cultural teams will be taking part in three separate sessions at Whangarei's O'Hara Park during Labour weekend. The last festival was in 1986, with 26 teams taking part.
Tonight's programme focuses on younger Māori performing arts groups, who go through similar rigours of training and coaching as the adult teams. In April of this year, Auckland held its annual Māori and Pacific Islands Cultural Festival, with 31 schools and colleges put up Māori groups and over 1,000 young Māori performers taking part. This programme features items from the performances of Rutherford College and Waiuku College.
