Their recommendations include increased police enforcement of truck regulations. GUN LAWS - Police minister John Luxton has appointed retired judge Justice Thorp to look into gun laws and debate has started over semi-automatic weapons and licensing. ROAD SAFETY - The road toll is down in urban areas, but not rural ones, so rural drivers have been targetted with a new million dollar campaign. 0800 NEWS/WEATHER TOBACCO - Anti-smoking groups in this country say we should follow president Clinton's lead if he decides to classify tobacco as a drug and bring in tougher laws. TRUCK SAFETY - The Road Transport Assn, which represents truck companies and owner/drivers says it's happy with a select committee report on truck safety. 0830 NEWS/SPORTS TOBACCO - As anticipation of Clinton's announcement on tobacco increases, Republican presidential candidate Bob Dole says Clinton's trying to deflect attention from his failure in the war on drugs, i/v with correspondent Martin Walker. DRINK DRIVING - The Court of Appeal's sending a signal to judges it wants harsher penalties for drunk drivers who cause injuries. The court yesterday upheld a three year jail sentence for an Invercargill drunk driver who injured three people last year. Voicer from Merle Nowland. TRUCK SAFETY - One of the claims of the parliamentary transport select committee on truck safety is that there is not enough enforcement of safety laws and not enough reviews of licences.
