Extended RNZ National news coverage of the attacks on the World Trade Centre in New York and the Pentagon.
0500 Special early edition of Morning Report programme starts with Geoff Robinson giving a resume of events: 4 planes hijacked - 2 deliberately crashed into New York's World Trade Centre's twin towers and 1 into Pentagon near Washington DC. Loss of life expected to be high following the collapse of the Trade Centre towers where thousands of people work. Pentagon on fire. 4th hijacked plane crashed south of Pittsburgh. Attacks began just before 9am New York time at height of peak hour. American Airlines says it has lost 2 planes with a total of 156 people aboard and United Airlines says it has also lost 2 planes. All major government buildings evacuated in New York and Washington DC and high security cordon placed around White House. Authorities ban all aircraft from taking off across US and trans-Atlantic flights diverted to Canada. Borders between US and Canada, and US and Mexico have been closed. Communications paralysed and financial markets closed. Early speculation about the source of the attack centre on Saudi terrorist Osama bin Laden, now living in Afghanistan.
