Te Araroa is a township where the tohunga and the local GP share a mutual respect - which seems eminently sensible in a Māori community. A township which has faced its share of hardships: Cyclone Bola, the rural downturn, unemployment - with no hint of despondency.

Alwyn Owen talks with some of the residents of Te Araroa, on the North Island's East Coast. Identified speakers in this recording include:
Anaru 'Skip' Paenga - the local school headmaster
Bob McConnell- a former headmaster
Jimmy Kururangi and Herewini Reid, pig hunters
Sam Coster, the local GP
Rebecca Moana, mother of children at boarding school in Wellington
