Alwyn Owen interviews Max Jones, a retired detective sergeant living in the Murray River town of Renmark, South Australia. He talks about a New Zealander who became known as "Possum", the Hermit of Murray River.

Max Jones tells of first meeting of Possum, [David James Jones] in 1954, and of the friendship that gradually developed between them. Possum had been living in the district since 1928.

He was born in 1901 in New Zealand and a shearer, who had served time in an Australian prison.
