Te Karere brings you key events and stories of interest to Māori, as well as bringing a Māori perspective to the day's news and current affairs.

The All Blacks 7's squad for the Wellington tournament has been announced and features four additional players. The squad of 22 features 3 new caps, Josh van Lieshout, Sione Molia and Billy Ropiha, while star athlete Sonny Bill Williams has also been named.

The NZ Warriors are set to announce their 18-man squad for the upcoming NRL 9's with some big stars expected to be named. Coach Andrew McFadden has some tough decisions with the majority of players healthy and eager to play the tournament, he does, however, have the luxury of selecting arguably three of the best players in the NRL.

Today saw the finals for the intermediates and J16 paddlers at the Waka Ama Sprint Nationals with one crew taking home three gold medals.

The proposed alternative silver fern flag will be flying from the Auckland Harbour Bridge soon - except for Waitangi Day. The announcement was made by Ministers Bill English and Simon Bridges who said the flag will start flying alongside the current one from Friday, January 22. Mr English says it will be flown until the end of the referendum period on March 24, except for Waitangi Day when the current flag will be flown alongside the Tino Rangatiratanga flag.

The TPPA controversy is amping up in Te Tai Tokerau. On Monday, Te Karere reported Ngāpuhi kaumātua stating the government wouldn't be made welcome at Waitangi if it went ahead with plans to host the signing of the multilateral pact here in NZ. Now local MP, Kelvin Davis has jumped into the debate.

Hīkoi against the TPP agreement are being organised throughout the country. It’s expected many will attend the Auckalnd march set down for February 4. One of those who will be supporting it is Greens Māori MP Marama Davidson who says despite the intentions to sign the deal the fight to stop it must continue in order to protect NZs environment.

Labour's Te Tai Tonga MP Rino Tirikatene is blaming the National Government for the loss of 60 hoki processing jobs at Sealord in Nelson. Sealord informed staff yesterday that its Kirimi line, that produces crumbed fish bites, was no longer commercially viable due to offshore competition.

The Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment Jobs Online report shows labourers had the largest increase of job vacancies of all occupations in the last month. But will it provide relief for addressing the ongoing high numbers of Māori unemployment?
