China's year of political trauma beginning with the death of Chou En-Lai, then marked by the downfall of Teng Hsiao-Ping and now by the accusations levelled against radical leaders Chiang Ching, Mao's widow, Chang Chun Chiao, Vice-Premier, Wang Hun-Wen and Yao Wen-Yuan who are rumoured to have been arrested. Persistent rumours are that moderate Hua Kuo-Feng has been named as Chairman. Doctor Allan Levett, Victoria University Sociologist discusses China's political dichotomy, centralism versus democracy and speculates the implications of the rumoured events.
