A documentary about the central North Island town of Tūrangi. Explains how Te Kooti once fought in nearby Tokaanu, and now Italian engineers and tunnellers battle with the huge task of building the Tongariro Hydroelectric Power Scheme Development, the largest project in the North Island.

In 1974,Tūrangi celebrated its 10th Anniversary. The first construction town built to permanent standards with first class housing, a central shopping area, power, water and sewerage systems laid underground, Tūrangi is a community with a strong sense of identity. The town’s cultural background is that of the Tūwharetoa Iwi, upon whose land the new development is taking place. The wedding of a young Māori couple is shown and there is an interview with John Asher (Ngāti Tūwharetoa) - Native Land Board, in front of Tāpeka Wharenui. A group of school children perform “Tahi Nei Taru Kino” and there is a performance by the local drama group.

Bert Dekker - Project Engineer, explains the headwater diversions from the various tributaries culminating at the Tokaanu Power House and generating 200,000 kilowatts. He also discusses the effects the project will have on the surrounding area.

Others interviewed include: Des Smith - Engineer; Walley Greenland - Senior Overseer and Geoff Sanderson, Angler.
