This Pacific Magazine title features two items.
They Drive With Their Boots Off: To help promote road safety in New Zealand 42 of the latest car models assemble in Wellington for an economy run to Auckland. The engines are inspected to ensure there are no modifications to cheat on petrol consumption, then the engines are sealed and the petrol tanks filled to a specified level.
The event is overseen by the Association of New Zealand Car Clubs and the drivers are accompanied by observers to ensure they adhere to the road code.
A large crowd gathers for the start of the run and the Minister of Transport, Mr W S Goosman waves the cars off from the start line. The route takes the cars over the Remutaka Hill road and through the Manawatu Gorge to Palmerston North for the first night’s stop. The second day sees the cars travel through Wanganui, New Plymouth, Te Kuiti and the King Country to Rotorua. The final day of the run sees the cars arrive Auckland where they are welcomed by a brass band and marching girls.
The Mayor of Auckland Mr J H Luxford presents the winner’s cup to Ken Hudsey and Harry Doig of Wanganui, driving a MG Magnet.
Report on Nelson: The decision to demolish the railway line from Nelson to Glenhope caused a controversy among the people of Nelson.
A group of women, including Sonja Davies, sat on the railway tracks at Kiwi in protest of the demolition. The arrested “rail-sitters” made international news.
An amateur cameraman, Tas McKee, filmed a protest meeting held on the cathedral steps.
