000:14 THE DRY SEASON IS DANGEROUS - A FIRE CONSCIOUS PUBLIC: A public campaign is warning people of the dangers of forest fires. Men of the Forest Service prepare fire breaks and a top dressing plane drops chemicals, recognised as a more profitable method of gorse control than a burn off.
An absent-minded man lights a fire on a picnic. It gets out of control and is soon a roaing forest fire.
002:59 HAWKES BAY HUSTLE - SHEEP MEET GANG: It’s 4am and Eric Tahu and his shearing gang arrive at the Mason Ridge Station, their home for the next week or so. The hand pieces are sharpened and ready for use, and number one shearer, Adam gets down to work.
At 9:45, it’s smoko and the men play draughts. The fleecos sort the wool - hard work but good pay and good fun!
006:19 INDUSTRIAL CANTERBURY - GLASSBLOWERS MAKE GLARE-KILLERS: At a Hornby glass factory, 25,000 items are turned out daily. The automatic press produces 300 dozen tumblers every 24 hours. Women stencil the designs onto the finished products.
The furnace is heated to 2700 degrees Fahrenheit and skilled craftsmen blow ornate lampshades.
