The film opens with footage of the 10th annual Dunedin “round the town race”, 36 laps around the city streets. Denny Hulme is the winner and takes away the £150 prize money and a glass of champagne.

In Auckland, preparations are underway for the 1961 New Zealand International Grand Prix at Ardmore. Before the big day drivers relax shopping and catching the sights on Auckland’s beaches where New Zealander, Bruce McLaren tries out water-skiing.

On raceday 60,000 people and their 15,000 cars pack Ardmore to watch 24 competitors, including 14 overseas drivers compete for the coveted chequered flag. After a close struggle over the closing laps Australian legend, Jack Brabham, wins his third Grand Prix title with Bruce McLaren coming in second.
